Gardeners Charlton Health and Safety Policy
Gardeners Charlton is committed to providing gardening and grounds maintenance services in a way that protects the health, safety and welfare of our employees, clients, visitors, contractors and members of the public. This Health and Safety Policy sets out the standards and procedures that guide our work on every site we attend.
We recognise that gardening and landscape work can involve physical effort, machinery, equipment and materials that carry inherent risks. Our aim is to identify, control and, where possible, eliminate these risks through planning, supervision, training and safe systems of work.
Policy Aims and Responsibilities
The overall aim of this policy is to prevent accidents, injuries, work-related ill health and damage to property or the environment. We will provide and maintain safe working conditions, safe equipment, and safe methods of work appropriate to the gardening services we deliver.
Management at Gardeners Charlton is responsible for implementing this policy and ensuring that health and safety considerations are integrated into all planning and decision-making. Supervisors and team leaders must ensure that work is carried out in accordance with this policy and that suitable risk controls are in place before tasks begin.
Every gardener and member of staff has a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. Staff are expected to follow safety instructions, use equipment correctly, wear any required personal protective equipment and report any hazards, incidents or near misses without delay.
Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work
Before starting work at a garden or site, we will assess the risks associated with the tasks to be carried out. This may include, but is not limited to, risks from uneven ground, slopes, water features, overhead obstacles, fragile surfaces, traffic, tools, chemicals and adverse weather conditions.
From these assessments, we will establish safe systems of work appropriate to the location and activities. These can include designated work areas, restricted access zones, methods for handling tools, procedures for working near the public, and controls for manual handling, noise and vibration exposure.
Risk assessments are reviewed regularly and whenever there are significant changes to the type of work, the site conditions, equipment used or staff involved.
Training, Supervision and Competence
Gardeners Charlton ensures that all staff are provided with information, instruction and training relevant to their roles and tasks. This includes induction training on health and safety, safe use of tools and machinery, manual handling techniques, and emergency procedures.
Where work involves specialist activities, only trained and competent staff will be assigned to these tasks. Where necessary, staff will undertake recognised training and refresher courses to maintain competence, particularly when operating powered machinery or handling hazardous substances.
Appropriate supervision is provided to ensure that safety procedures are followed, that new staff are supported, and that any unsafe practices are identified and corrected promptly.
Tools, Machinery and Equipment Safety
We are committed to maintaining all tools, machinery and equipment in a safe and serviceable condition. Regular inspections, servicing and repairs are carried out in line with manufacturer recommendations and any relevant safety guidance.
Before use, staff must check that tools and machines are in good condition, with guards and safety devices in place and functioning. Any defects or suspected faults must be reported immediately and the equipment taken out of use until it has been inspected and, if necessary, repaired or replaced.
Only trained and authorised staff may operate powered equipment such as lawn mowers, hedge trimmers, leaf blowers, chainsaws or similar machinery. Equipment must be used strictly in accordance with instructions and with the recommended personal protective equipment.
Use of Chemicals and Hazardous Substances
When gardening tasks require the use of chemicals such as fertilisers, weed control products or cleaning agents, we will manage these substances in a way that minimises risks to people, plants and wildlife.
We will assess the hazards of each substance, follow the manufacturer instructions and use the least harmful products that are suitable for the job. Storage, transport, mixing and application of chemicals will be controlled to prevent spills, contamination and exposure.
Personal protective equipment, such as gloves, eye protection or respiratory protection, will be provided and used where required. Any leftover chemicals and containers will be disposed of responsibly and in line with environmental and safety guidance.
Personal Protective Equipment
Gardeners Charlton provides personal protective equipment appropriate to the tasks undertaken. This may include safety boots, gloves, eye and ear protection, high-visibility clothing, and other specialist items where tasks present specific risks.
Staff are required to use the protective equipment provided and to take care of it. Damaged or lost items must be reported promptly so that replacements can be arranged and work can continue safely.
Protection of Clients, Visitors and the Public
We recognise that many gardening tasks take place in residential gardens and shared outdoor spaces where clients, visitors, neighbours and the general public may be present. Our staff must plan and carry out work with consideration for those nearby.
Where necessary, temporary barriers, warning signs or safe walking routes may be used to keep others away from active work areas. Machinery and tools will never be left unattended in a way that could pose a risk, and materials will be stored securely.
Noise, dust and debris will be managed so far as is reasonably practicable to minimise disruption and potential harm to others.
Incident Reporting and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, injuries, near misses and hazardous situations must be reported to management as soon as possible. This enables us to take immediate action if required and to investigate the causes so that lessons can be learned and measures put in place to prevent recurrence.
First aid arrangements are in place for staff working on site, and emergency procedures are communicated during training and briefings. Staff must familiarise themselves with these procedures and know what to do in the event of an incident involving themselves, colleagues, clients or members of the public.
Continuous Improvement and Policy Review
Gardeners Charlton is committed to the continuous improvement of its health and safety performance. We will monitor compliance with this policy, review incidents and feedback, and update our procedures as necessary to reflect changes in best practice, guidance and the nature of our work.
This Health and Safety Policy is reviewed regularly to ensure it remains suitable and effective. Any significant changes will be communicated to all staff and brought into effect as part of our normal working procedures.
By working together and following this policy, we aim to provide high-quality gardening services while protecting the wellbeing of everyone affected by our activities.
